Magnetic bead-based method uses magnetic beads for nucleic acid separation where the surface of the magnetic bead is chemically modified to adsorb the nucleic acid.
The magnetic bead-based nucleic acid separation process typically involves three simple steps: binding, washing, and elution.
First, in the binding step, magnetic beads are added to the lysate suspension, followed by the binding of nucleic acid onto the surface of the magnetic beads.
Next, in the washing step, the magnetic field or magnet is applied to attract and hold the magnetic beads together so that washing can be done to remove the unwanted particles in the mixture.
Finally, in the elution step, the nucleic acid is eluted or released from the surface of the magnetic beads using specialized buffer, followed by removal of the magnetic beads, hence leaving behind the nucleic acid in the mixture or eluant.

Magnetic bead-based method of separation of nucleic acids is simple, efficient and quick compared to other techniques and is the preferred platform for automated nucleic acid extraction.
